ROUGH CUT

here is our rough cut for our thriller opening,

Thursday 11th March Update

Today we found some suitable music for our thriller film, we decided to use orchestra music to build dramatic tension, to draw the viewer in and create an emotional feel to the film, however we had some problems trying to fit in the music and so we decided to upload our clip without it, we then put this into garage band.
Verity finished off the credits which look effective. During the car scene, we made the lighting go from light, to dark, to light, and during the dark bit we put in some white typewriter credits, which looked affective.

We then asked Barney for some more sound effects as the ones we had on garage band weren't suitable, We are now looking through and picking the ones we need.

We are now uploading our clip to youtube, so we can get the embed and upload it to blogger.com

Rough Cut

today is our deadline for out rough cut for our thriller opening and we have to make sure that our opening for our thriller is up to scratch and put it onto youtube then the blog.
we need to make sure that our opening has credits and effects and need to make sure we have a soundtrack for it...

tomorrow we will be watching the other peoples rough cuts in our class and giving feedback on things that they can do to improve it.

filming and music

today we were looking at music for out opening scene, we found it hard as there is not much music on garage band that fits to out opening scene, eventually we found some that we may use but we will carry in looking next lesson.
i was editing the opening scene and adding credits to it, i found it hard as it was difficult to add it smoothly into the clips, also there was no font that we liked as we don't have the text we had before for our opening scene.

Tuesday 9th March

Today we concentrated on editing our film a bit more. We added credits to our film and Adam worked on garage band to add some music to create suspense for the thriller effect. We had some trouble with garage band music, as the music that we imported to go with the film was too happy.

Editing Thriller

Today we captured our thriller footage and started to edit.
Our opening scene consists of showing I-dent which will then fade out and show the victim lying on the floor. We chose the Fade effect because it makes the transition between look a lot better. We then introduce the main character and show her writing down notes.

At first we had difficulties with the scene were the character walks to her car but we managed to crop and edit out the dolly in the background. We had to choose which angle the character was being filmed from as she got in the car and eventually chose an over the shoulder. The scene where the car shown going down the driveway needed to be darker. We noticed that the next scene where she gets out if the car it is night so it does not look as fluent. We managed to find a colour corrector to make the scene darker but still haven't found the right so the brightness keeps changing. We made small changes and managed to make the scene look right.

One idea that was changed was that we didn't have a suspect sheet but instead we had an article on the computer. At the end we noticed that the length of the opening was slightly more than 2 minutes so decided to either shorten a scene or cut them.

Filming,

yesterday i went and filmed all the footage for our thriller opening, i used two of my fiends (sian bell and jack cootes) as the two characters in the footage, we used ketchup for the blood and chalk for the outline around the body to give it the crime scene effect, and a brick as a murder weapon next to him with blood on, we then had scenes of the body showing the body lying on the floor and setting the scene, these will be used at the beginning of the opening for the thriller, we then filmed clip of the policewoman taking notes of the scene and used different shots, for example, over the shoulder looking at what she is writing and you can see the body in the background. we then filmed her walking over to the car and getting into the car and turning the radio on, we shot this from different angles and did a close up of her hand opening the car door. I then filmed a person driving down the drive were the police woman lives, we used a yellow pot on the car giving the car a police status, we then filmed her getting out the car and walking into the house, we used the camera hand healed then to give the impression she is being followed, the clip ends when she closed the door and continues when she is in the kitchen and sits down and looks at the folders in front of her and looks up at the camera then ends when the camera ducks down, making it seem the person following her is hiding. The footage ends with her typing on the laptop a document regarding the death.

I feel the filming went well and i am pleased with the results and think it will work well when it has been edited.

Today we are going to film for our thriller film, we will need props including:
-white chalk
-fake blood
-pictures of suspects
-paperwork
-laptop
-folders..
I am going to find these things around the house and get picturs of suspects from the internet and print them, will make the blood from tomato ketchup and water and use my laptop.

Proffesional Thriller Film

Find a youtube clip of a director who you think creates similar films to the one you are making. Post a clip of one of their films that are similar to yours and post a clip of them talking about their film.

Our Target audience

Our target audience would be about 12+ years of age, this because it would appeal to a maturer audience as it will have a serious plot line dealing with real world issues, to do with teenage life and manic depression, we made it a 12 so people or similar age to the characters staring in our trailer. We believe this is the most suitable age as a younger audience it would not attract their interests as much. Our opening scene would be unsuitable for children under 12, as our ideas can be quite scary and could be quite disturbing for children. For example the flashes of the knife in and out of scenes.

Target audience

Our target audience is aged 15 - 30 as the story line is complicated and requires the audience to pay attention, we do this by having the content at the BFI standard and staying inside the guidelines. In our 2 minute sequence we don't include any bad language or sexual content, but the clip contains a graphic picture of a dead person on the floor.

The BBFC permits the following within the bounds of the 15 certificate:

Theme: No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate to 15 year olds.

Language: There may be frequent use of strong language; the strongest terms are only rarely acceptable. Continued aggressive use of strong language and sexual abuse is unacceptable.

Nudity: There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

Sex: Sexual activity and nudity may be portrayed but without strong detail. The depiction of casual sex should be handled responsibly. There may be occasional strong verbal references to sexual behaviour.

Violence: Violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain, and of injuries. Scenes of sexual violence must be discreet and brief.

Imitable techniques: Dangerous combat techniques such as ear claps, head-butts and blows to the neck are unlikely to be acceptable. There may be no emphasis on the use of easily accessible lethal weapons (in particular, knives).

1-In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We challenge the conventions of a normal thriller by having a woman as the main character, this is not common and is seen in films like silence of the lambs. The music we use is going to be made from garage band and is typical of a thriller film and creates tension and goes with the scene. We also have realistic settings and don't use places that are commonly used by ordinary people.

our main protagenist is ment to be a young woman who is dedicated to her job and always follows through a case till the end.

Our media film represents the main protagonist as a classic police agent who is dedicated to the job and doesnt have much of a social life, or friends who spends the whole time on the job solving crimes and always sees a job though till the end.

conventions=Character, theme, revenge, motive, tension, music
main challenged convention- Bethan is main character and is a female this is challenged because most protagonists in thriller films are males to appeal to the male audience and most of them seem like stronger characters. One convention our protagonist follows is that she has a motive and is determines to solve the murder this is going to be the convention that develops throughout the film as she gets closer to solving the murder.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our main character is not stereotypical but she represents a strong female character because it is unusual for a female to be a detective. She is the main focus of the film and represents an important member of the police force. I think female audience members will be able to relate to her as she is a strong willed character and it will make the film more interesting for them.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
New line Cinema produced the film Seven which is a popular thriller film i think that our film could be produced by this company because they did so well with Seven. It could be shown in cinema because it is similar themes and story. Our I-dent could be used as well because it is very dark and links to thrillers.

Our film is rated as a 15 and i think that is a suitable certificate. I think young teens will enjoy this as it is a tense and dark thriller and will keep you hanging until the end. gender/interests/what other thrillers might they like

We are using a young character and the time that are film is set in is slightly older to change the style and add more interest. I think out Ident is very modern and looks cool which will hopefully impress the audience. location/music/edits
