What People Thought Of Our Opening Thriller Clip

Feedback

- Good camera work, over the shoulder shots worked effectively
- We should make titles longer so people can read them
- It's a short duration
- The dark bits we need to lighten up
- Music desperately needs to be added to create the right thriller mood.

ROUGH CUT

here is our rough cut for our thriller opening,

Thursday 11th March Update

Today we found some suitable music for our thriller film, we decided to use orchestra music to build dramatic tension, to draw the viewer in and create an emotional feel to the film, however we had some problems trying to fit in the music and so we decided to upload our clip without it, we then put this into garage band.
Verity finished off the credits which look effective. During the car scene, we made the lighting go from light, to dark, to light, and during the dark bit we put in some white typewriter credits, which looked affective.

We then asked Barney for some more sound effects as the ones we had on garage band weren't suitable, We are now looking through and picking the ones we need.

We are now uploading our clip to youtube, so we can get the embed and upload it to blogger.com

Rough Cut

today is our deadline for out rough cut for our thriller opening and we have to make sure that our opening for our thriller is up to scratch and put it onto youtube then the blog.
we need to make sure that our opening has credits and effects and need to make sure we have a soundtrack for it...

tomorrow we will be watching the other peoples rough cuts in our class and giving feedback on things that they can do to improve it.

Tuesday 9 March 2010

filming and music

today we were looking at music for out opening scene, we found it hard as there is not much music on garage band that fits to out opening scene, eventually we found some that we may use but we will carry in looking next lesson.
i was editing the opening scene and adding credits to it, i found it hard as it was difficult to add it smoothly into the clips, also there was no font that we liked as we don't have the text we had before for our opening scene.

Tuesday 9th March

Today we concentrated on editing our film a bit more. We added credits to our film and Adam worked on garage band to add some music to create suspense for the thriller effect. We had some trouble with garage band music, as the music that we imported to go with the film was too happy.

Friday 5 March 2010

Targets

targets for what we want to achieve
-experiment with effects and find ones that enhance the footage
-experiment with credits and find out where to put them on the footage
-experiment with garageband to find music that fits to out footage
-experiment with fades and making the clips link together smoothly
-once finished get timing right for clips and music and any special effects added.

Editing Thriller

Today we captured our thriller footage and started to edit.
Our opening scene consists of showing I-dent which will then fade out and show the victim lying on the floor. We chose the Fade effect because it makes the transition between look a lot better. We then introduce the main character and show her writing down notes.

At first we had difficulties with the scene were the character walks to her car but we managed to crop and edit out the dolly in the background. We had to choose which angle the character was being filmed from as she got in the car and eventually chose an over the shoulder. The scene where the car shown going down the driveway needed to be darker. We noticed that the next scene where she gets out if the car it is night so it does not look as fluent. We managed to find a colour corrector to make the scene darker but still haven't found the right so the brightness keeps changing. We made small changes and managed to make the scene look right.

One idea that was changed was that we didn't have a suspect sheet but instead we had an article on the computer. At the end we noticed that the length of the opening was slightly more than 2 minutes so decided to either shorten a scene or cut them.

Filming,

yesterday i went and filmed all the footage for our thriller opening, i used two of my fiends (sian bell and jack cootes) as the two characters in the footage, we used ketchup for the blood and chalk for the outline around the body to give it the crime scene effect, and a brick as a murder weapon next to him with blood on, we then had scenes of the body showing the body lying on the floor and setting the scene, these will be used at the beginning of the opening for the thriller, we then filmed clip of the policewoman taking notes of the scene and used different shots, for example, over the shoulder looking at what she is writing and you can see the body in the background. we then filmed her walking over to the car and getting into the car and turning the radio on, we shot this from different angles and did a close up of her hand opening the car door. I then filmed a person driving down the drive were the police woman lives, we used a yellow pot on the car giving the car a police status, we then filmed her getting out the car and walking into the house, we used the camera hand healed then to give the impression she is being followed, the clip ends when she closed the door and continues when she is in the kitchen and sits down and looks at the folders in front of her and looks up at the camera then ends when the camera ducks down, making it seem the person following her is hiding. The footage ends with her typing on the laptop a document regarding the death.
I feel the filming went well and i am pleased with the results and think it will work well when it has been edited.

Our Target audience

Our target audience would be about 12+ years of age, this because it would appeal to a maturer audience as it will have a serious plot line dealing with real world issues, to do with teenage life and manic depression, we made it a 12 so people or similar age to the characters staring in our trailer. We believe this is the most suitable age as a younger audience it would not attract their interests as much. Our opening scene would be unsuitable for children under 12, as our ideas can be quite scary and could be quite disturbing for children. For example the flashes of the knife in and out of scenes.

Target Audience Questionairre.

question 1.
Would you prefer a male or a female as the main character?.

question 2.
What is your favourite thriller film and why?

question 3.
What excites you in a thriller film?

question 4.
How important is an I-dent to you in thriller?

question 5.
Does the soundtrack matter in a thriller film?

Target audience

Our target audience is aged 15 - 30 as the story line is complicated and requires the audience to pay attention, we do this by having the content at the BFI standard and staying inside the guidelines. In our 2 minute sequence we don't include any bad language or sexual content, but the clip contains a graphic picture of a dead person on the floor.

The BBFC permits the following within the bounds of the 15 certificate:

Theme: No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate to 15 year olds.
Language: There may be frequent use of strong language; the strongest terms are only rarely acceptable. Continued aggressive use of strong language and sexual abuse is unacceptable.
Nudity: There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.
Sex: Sexual activity and nudity may be portrayed but without strong detail. The depiction of casual sex should be handled responsibly. There may be occasional strong verbal references to sexual behaviour.
Violence: Violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain, and of injuries. Scenes of sexual violence must be discreet and brief.
Imitable techniques: Dangerous combat techniques such as ear claps, head-butts and blows to the neck are unlikely to be acceptable. There may be no emphasis on the use of easily accessible lethal weapons (in particular, knives).
Horror: Sustained or detailed infliction of pain or injury is unacceptable.
Drugs: Drug taking may be shown but clear instructive detail is unacceptable. The film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug use.

Evaluation notes

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • Our main protagonist is female which challenges the convention of a thriller.
  • Our music is eerie which follows the convention of a thriller.
2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  • Our product doesn't represent any particular social groups
  • Our main character is a female which is not stereotypical and she is meant to represent the police and is the main focus of the film and we follow her throughout to see how she solves the crime
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
  • Our film might be distributed by the same people who distributes identity as our films style is similar
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
  • Our audience would mainly be made up of crime thriller enthusiasts and anybody between the age of 15 and 30
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
  • We attracted our audience by using a young female main actor and by using a cool ident, also it is quite old fashioned which is original
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?
  • We have already learnt about uploading the video from the camera to the mac
7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Evaluation questions. - verity

1-
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
We challenge the conventions of a normal thriller by having a woman as the main character, this is not common and is seen in films like silence of the lambs. The music we use is going to be made from garage band and is typical of a thriller film and creates tension and goes with the scene. We also have realistic settings and don't use places that are commonly used by ordinary people.
our main protagenist is ment to be a young woman who is dedicated to her job and always follows through a case till the end.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our media film represents the main protagonist as a classic police agent who is dedicated to the job and doesnt have much of a social life, or friends who spends the whole time on the job solving crimes and always sees a job though till the end.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
i think that a media distribution like columbia pictures cooperation would distribute out film as they have distributed the film 'identity' and our film is very simmilar to that, also a company like universal may distrubute it as they distribute a variety of genres including thrillers

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
the audience we are aiming our product at is at 15-30 aged people as the story line is complicated and requires attention

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
characters- clothing relating to them.
music
titles
settings

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?
dollys
final cut
garage band

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Evaluation notes

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

conventions=Character, theme, revenge, motive, tension, music
main challenged convention- Bethan is main character and is a female this is challenged because most protagonists in thriller films are males to appeal to the male audience and most of them seem like stronger characters. One convention our protagonist follows is that she has a motive and is determines to solve the murder this is going to be the convention that develops throughout the film as she gets closer to solving the murder.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our main character is not stereotypical but she represents a strong female character because it is unusual for a female to be a detective. She is the main focus of the film and represents an important member of the police force. I think female audience members will be able to relate to her as she is a strong willed character and it will make the film more interesting for them.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
New line Cinema produced the film Seven which is a popular thriller film i think that our film could be produced by this company because they did so well with Seven. It could be shown in cinema because it is similar themes and story. Our I-dent could be used as well because it is very dark and links to thrillers.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
Our film is rated as a 15 and i think that is a suitable certificate. I think young teens will enjoy this as it is a tense and dark thriller and will keep you hanging until the end. gender/interests/what other thrillers might they like

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
We are using a young character and the time that are film is set in is slightly older to change the style and add more interest. I think out Ident is very modern and looks cool which will hopefully impress the audience. location/music/edits

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?
This time we made sure we had time to practice our test shots which enabled us to improve and get used to the software on the computers. This made it easier to edit. cameras/final cut/garageband/blog/stills cameras/youtube

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
planning/test footage/new final cut skills/altered ideas/music

Preparation for evaluation (better than Adam and aidan's put together)

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
- Because we have researched the conventions of a thriller film, we knew what to include. This helps our outcome to be more professional like real media products.
-We can't however have similar settings to real thriller films, because we don't have a budget and we can't for example, film off roof tops (for example the film Vertigo) because that would cross health and safety issues.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our media product represents particular social groups such as teenagers, because the main character is a teenager and therefore teenagers can relate.
- Most of the time, the main character of a thriller film is a man, however we decided to give a twist and have the protagonist as a woman, not only will this help to appeal to women, but it makes the film interesting.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The kinds of media that will distribute my media product will be in the form of:
- Posters: This will help advertise and promote our thriller film and increase viewings/sales.
- DVD: The dvd will be a convenient way to distribute our film, most thriller films are distributed by dvd.
- TV adverts: This will boost sales by displaying clips of our film to entice potential customers.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
The target market is aimed at men and women, because although the main character (the detective) is a woman. The detective theme is leaned more towards the male gender because stereotypically, men like sort of crime/mystery thriller films.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
We attracted/addressed our audience by

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?
The 'Adobe Photoshop' software that we used was a very productive, it was easy to use and had a proffesional look to our Ident product.

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
We have learnt...

Blog of the Week review

The main reason they won blog of the week is because they include a lot of detail and have a lot of pictures which makes it nicer to look at. It also shows that they know exactly what they are doing and have planned a lot. Each blog has a certain subject and does well to provide examples and pictures in. The mugshots blog is impressive because they have explained how they improved their pictures. They have put a lot of effort into the storyboard blog and show a step by step of each picture and even included errors. I think we need to add more pictures in our blogs so that they are easier to understand and people wont get bored just reading blocks of writing. I think we need to show pictures of our props and costumes so that we know exactly what we will need when we are filming.Their blogs are very organised because they are dine in stages and the layout is very neat because everything is not all in one blog. I think this is what we need to do so its easier for us to know exactly what blog we did on certain days. and on time and every member of the group has contributed to all the blogs. We need to go through all of our blogs and update them and possible to a blog for each separate section.

Analysis of Batman, the darknight movie trailer.

The beginning of the trailer begins with the idents that are involved in making the film.
The dark night trailer is is good at creating a good dark atmosphere and thriller settings and storyline from clips of the film, the trailer gives a brief outline of what happens in the film and introduces the protagonist and antagonist and the love interest.
The trailer shows clips of destruction and chaos from the film.
The music is dark, going in time with the editing scenes and sound effects of things blowing up and the laugh of the joker overlapping the scenes, also the voice of the joker is playing over the clips when it goes black, creating tension and the trailer ends with the title of the film in white contrasting with the black background and making it stand out.

Analysing the poster for Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is a crime thriller about Los Angeles mobsters and small-time criminals. It's well known for the graphic violence.

The poster displays the main character, who is a sex object and a bit of a rebel. She does a lot of drugs, smokes and plays with guns. In the poster, Uma Thurman is shown laid out on a bed, with a fag in hand, and objects such as a gun. She is also wearing a dress that shows a bit of cleavage and heels. This gives a hint to whats in the film.

Sub-Genres of Thrillers

Action thriller: Features a race against the clock and contains violence and explosions and guns, it also contains an obvious antagonist.

Crime thriller: Involves a crime or crimes, and focus on criminals rather than the police and emphasize action these films include murders, robberies chases, shootouts and double-crosses.

Drama thriller: Usually slower pace and involves character development and twists in the plot.

Political thriller: The protagonist has to work to become a member of the government.

Psychological thriller: The action between the protagonist and the antagonist is mental rather than physical, but may end with a little violence to resolve the situation.

These are all the different types of sub-genres.

Analysis Taken poster.

Taken is an action thriller about an ex spy (Liam Neeson) who is the films protagonist. The film is based on the relationship of him and his daughter who gets 'Taken'.

As you can see Liam Neeson is in the centre of the poster and is the main focus. The style of the title is quite simple but bold so it stands out and the colours match. In the background you see a filmstrip of key points in the film. Next to the character there is a small line of quotes which link to the film and because the three words are highlighted it gives of a better effect of a dark thriller. The colour scheme is very dark and is good atmosphere for the film. The character is dressed in simple black attire and is only holding a gun. This is a very good example of a stereotypical spy . The expression on his face is very serious because he is determined to rescue his daughter and is his motive in the film. You can also see the emotion of the women in the background which shows that she is scared and gives you and idea that this film is very serious.

The ident

We made an ident for our thriller opening, we called the production label 'red eye' as this goes with the thriller genre, the ident has a black background and red writing saying 'red eye' liking the 'e' from the red with eye, e.g.:
r
e y e
d

We also have a eye with a red pupil linking back to the name of the production company.

Below is our ident.

Test footage

On Tuesdays lesson we took the camera out to the art block and did some practice footage. We wanted to practice our shots so we used the ones that are going to be in our thriller. Our first attempt when doing a tracking shot we used the dolly which didn't work very well due to the broken leg strap so the camera wasn't steady also the type of ground it was on made the shot wobbly and added noise. The second attempt we got Adam to go hand held and do a tracking shot of the fountain which we though looked better. The next shot we tried was the Closeup which slowly zoomed out. The object of focus was a drain and we took several retakes. In our thriller we are planning to have a over the shoulder tracking shot of the main character so we practiced this by having Aidan walking through the archway by the art block. We though this looked good because of the dark effect. We also filmed a wall of pictures so that we had idea of what we wanted in our film. We thought that our practice footage went well considering 1 group was not here so we had to change plans.

Wednesday 10 February 2010

I was inspired by a new thriller film coming out this Friday in cinema's called 'The Wolfman'. I only watched a trailer, but some good techniques have been used such as the lighting. The candles give off a mecabre feel, and the fog gives of a gloomy vibe. And I think if this film didn't have these element it would be a bad thriller film, becuase the storyline is a clique.

Here is the link seeing as it doesn't show an embed:

I also thought the titles were effective becuase the text is bold, fuzzy and stands out against the background. The moon also takes place of the 'O' which makes it slightly more interesting.

Font For Our Thriller Film

We are going to use the font 'Traveling Typewriter' because it gives a traditional detective feel to help set the theme. It is meant to be for the Title and the opening credits of our film, but obviously the title will be bigger than the credits to make it stand out.

Here is the link to our font:
http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=traveling_typewrite&page=1&nb_ppp_old=10&text=Clockwork&nb_ppp=10&psize=m&classt=alpha

We also looked at:

http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=uncle_typewriter&page=1&nb_ppp_old=10&text=Clockwork&nb_ppp=10&psize=m&classt=alpha

Which is a thriller type font that could also be suitable, however it's kinda hard to read, so we decided to go with the 'Traveling Typewriter' because it's much clearer to read.

Credit Analysis of 'Six Feet Under' and 'Panic Room'

Six Feet Under is a popular television drama which is shown on HBO. The programme's main
theme is death and the opening credits do well to show this. At the beginning of the credits you can see a crow flying in the sky which symbolizes death you then see to dark hands which start off linked and then begin to break away this is a way of showing how people let go when they die. The next part of the credits shows a dead body in the hospital being taken to the light you then see some Lilly's which is another representative of death. At the end of the credits you see the crow again which links to the first scene and rounds up the credits. There isn't a lot of text in the openings credits but there is a lot of images and things related to death this is very effective and gives you a basic idea of what the show is about. There is a mixture of diagetic and non-diagetic text to make the credits more attractive. Some of the credits are written in standard white text but then crumble away which also emphasizes on the theme of the show. Some of the credits are unusual because they are embedded into the scene e.g when a name is written on the tag of a dead body to make it seem more realistic.

Panic Room is a thriller film directed by David Fincher.

At the beginning of the opening you see the standard Columbus Ident which then fades out to an overview of New York City . You then see Non dietetic Credits appear on the side of the city buildings. The credits are written in blocked white text to blend into the scenery behind, they are not very scary and doesn't link well to a thriller. The music is very tense and does well to fit then thriller genre.

Story board for our thriller opening scene, Clockwork

Here is the storyboard for our idea of the thriller. We have drawn what happens and then described which shot is needed and what exactly happens in that scene.

Why thrillers thrive?

Thrillers provide us with the 'thrills' and 'shake-ups' that we crave but give us the sense that we are safe sitting in a arm chair at home watching it subconsciously knowing we are safe.
there was an exhibition of sideshow promising thrills, and there was a handful of people at a time and were sat in front of curtains, presuming the curtains would open to reveal a screen and watch a 'thrills' film one of the colous at the side started to fall and before anybody had the chance to panic or move the column was suspended ion the air, this provided a thrill but the show was eventually closed as people felt that there safety was at risk.

Thrillers are meant to thrill you.

Friday 29 January 2010

Compare and contrast your...

Compare and contrast your protagonist & antagonist with characters from a blockbuster thriller + include images.

  • In Sherlock Holmes the protagonist is also a detective, as in our film. However, in our film the protagonist is a woman which makes it different to most crime thrillers because the protagonist is is usually played by a man.

  • The opening of our film has been inspired by the film 'Identity' because of the way the protagonist has been filmed, which is in his home. We found that this scene helped establish the film opening as we are getting to know the character as he\she will be in their own surroundings.
  • Also like identity, at the beginning , we aren't going to show the antagonist because this will build tension as to who killed the victim.

  • Comparing our film to Terminator, the protagonist it obviously quite a physically strong character who is able to fight easily. Whereas, in our thriller film the protagonist is a woman and less strong than the main character out of Terminator.

Mise-en-scene Thriller

One choice of mise-en-scene in our thriller is the costumes and props. The main character is a detective who is at the crime scene and will be the protagonist of the film this is common in most crime thriller because there is always a detective who spends most of the film trying to solve the murder and then solving it at the end. The detective in our film differs from most because it will be a female which means we are not stereotyping and this could bring in a better audience. She will be wearing a simple long trench coat which a lot of old fashioned detectives wore to help link with the theme and make the crime scene seem more authentic here is an example of a modern film that uses a female as the main character from Silence of the Lambs.

We will also use a chalk outline in our crime scene. This links to help show what sort of time our film is based on because its very old fashioned. One thriller film in which a chalk outline is used is a film called This Man Must Die. This was used to show where a young boy was killed and the position his body was left in after his death, this helps create mystery as the police or detectives have to figure out how the boy was murdered. This has become very popular in crime thrillers and is recognized by most people This is the poster of This Man Must Die:

Presentation feedback

Today we pitched our thriller idea and got feedback and ideas from the teacher and the class. We still need to think of a location for the house scene. But have now thought of using Verity's house because it has a creepy driveway and it is a secluded location.
Holly liked the idea of doing an old fashioned crime scene because of the chalk outline. She also liked the idea of Bethan being the main character/protagonist, because it is different and interesting and is not common in modern films.

One question we got asked was what music are we planning to use in the opening sequence. We already knew the answer because it was included in our blog. The answer to this was music similar to the opening of Identity and our garageband version that Aidan and Adam created.

Another question asked was 'what are you going to wear Bethan? As you are a detective.' and Bethan said 'a macintosh' because it's traditional for a detective to wear.

Someone asked about how we plan to use suspect photos in our opening and who we plan to use. We said that we are going to have a tree of random people either from the internet or extra who are willing to be involved. Another person asked if it's just going to be bethan in the film, we answered "No, we plan to have other people playing police men or random extras." And also mentioned that there will not be any diegetic dialogue because it will ruin the atmosphere.

Tuesday 26 January 2010

Presentation pitch

The main story line of our film is based on a murder and the protagonist being a detective trying to solve the crime, this is common to the crime thriller genre. The detective is the main character and will be played by Bethan, this character is a little but weird, serious but gets the job done. This is different to most thrillers as the main character is a female.

The film starts shows the scene of the crime with the chalk outline of where the body was then the real body flashing in to show the viewers what the body actually looked like and who the victim was, this will probably be played by an extra. The effect used to show the body will be simalar to a flash back using flashing imagery. The possible location for the body will be a secluded alleyway which is out of the view to the public.

Then we will show the detective in her house trying to solve the crime this will show how she acts in her home environment and how she feels about her job, you will see on the wall many different pictures of possible suspects and writing to show how she is going to solve it. Were not sure of the exact location yet.
We think we will use a 12 or 15 certificate because of the way we will show the body and how we feel the rest of the film will go, our titles will be shown in an eerie way with a typewrite feel/music.

The music we will use will both be diagetic and non diagetic so you can hear whats going on in the house but the non diagetic will bring an eerie effect, we will possibly use a piano as our instrument.

The reason why this film could be certified a 12 or 15 is because of the violence that might be shown

(12) Violence
Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on
detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood,
but occasional gory moments may be permitted if
justified by the context.

(12) Theme
Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must
be suitable for young teenagers.circumstances, responsibility for
allowing a child under 12 to view.

(15) Theme
No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is
appropriate for 15 year olds.

(15) Violence
Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction
of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to
be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also
unlikely to be acceptable.
There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence
but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and
have a strong contextual justification

This film could be compared to Sherlock Holmes but it will be more serious and have less comedy. The opening will also be similar to the opening of identity.

Using Photoshop

We used photoshop to create our ident. It relates to the thriller film because it's called 'Red Eye Productions'.

New line cinema research.

New Line Cinema/New Line was founded 1967 and is a major american film studio producing some of the best films, for example Austin Powers, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Lord of the Rings.
The indent is a simple and effective, played to music that links to the film and the logo consists of film strips combined to form the end result of the logo.
The logo is good as it is genre appropriate for the thriller film and many other genres.

Garage Band task

Sound terminology

Ambient Sound- Natural Sound

Non Diegetic Sound- Sound that is added in.
Sound Effects

Asynchronous Sound- Sounds that contradict the images
Sound Bridge-Smooths the gap between the scenes.

Today we created our own opening piece of music for a 3 minute clip of the film Identity using Garage Band. The film is a thriller...

Garage Band Evidance

Today we used garage band to create a soundtrack to the film 'Identity'.

We used slow music to start of with to build suspense and tension and then the music got more fast paced as the clip progressed. We used different layers to make the soundtrack more complex.
We attempted to use diagetic music but we couldn't find any suitable in time. But if we were to do it again, we will try and put some in. The clip contained only non-diagetic sounds.

Constructive critisicm for 2 different thriller openings

Q2-47 Parrallel

The opening of the clip contains different effects such as split screen and dissolve, this is apparent to the thriller theme. The music links with the genre aswell, as it is slow and mysterious. The camera shots show places that aren't really necisary; for example a guys foot and they show close ups of this, which also links with the genre, because it's weird to focus on such things.
The screen splits occasionally, so you can see both characters doing the same thing which links to the title of 'parallel'. The blur effect added to the characters movements adds to their distorted feeling. The effect of changing character through a 180 degree camera movement adds to the whole theme of two parallel characters in the same place. The way this clip has been edited looks very professional because of all the cool effects and well used camera shots and angles. The two actors fit the clip well because they look older and do not look at the camera which makes its seem more natural. Also, the guys in the clip appear older than they look, and because thrillers are aimed at an older audience, this makes it appeal to the teenage audience and above.

Q2-43 Cracked

At the beginning, there is use of light and shadow techniques, and a sillouette of a girl smoking, which creates a contrast...

Analyzing conventions of the film Taken.

The film meets conventions of a crime thriller
as it involves a successful crime of trafficking
that is also a real life crime making the film
more realistic, there were many locations,
including a big city and seedy locations.
The main character has an ambition to save
his daughter and her friend, there is huge
rivalry from the people taking the girls
and the girls father, it is full of suspense.

The protagonist is the girls father, we know this
because he is not causing the crime and it is his
own daughter he is trying to save and become a
hero figure.

The antagonist is the characters taking the girls and
selling them off as sex slaves, you can tell this from the
trailer as the protagonist is killing them and trying to
stop them and get his daughter back.

Crime Thriller Conventions

-Suspenseful account of failed or successful crime.
-Involves murders, robberies, shot outs and double crosses.
-Can glorify the rise and fall of criminals, sometimes in real life.
-Often set in large crowded cities to provide view of a large secret world.
-characters have ambitious desire for success or recognition.
-Strong rivalry between binary and opposite characters.
-Often several locations, seedy interior locations.

Action Thriller conventions -
  • Obvious antagonist
  • Race against the time
  • More violence than other sub genres
  • Disruption to equilibrium requires the protagonist to use action to solve it
  • ^must be skilled in some form of contact
  • Usually involves a character of the opposite sex to drive the narrative
  • ^however their loyalty may be doubted
  • Often involves high profile actors
The Matrix

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zGw7gnUtHY&feature=related
The Matrix fits in with the conventions of the action thriller section as it evidently has more combat than other thrillers as in the scene it is pure fighting. Also it is a race against the clock as he has to get back to normality as quickly as possible,

Analysis of a pyschological triller

Conventions -
-Drama/Mystery
-Danger on a mental level rather than physical
-Narrative focuses on 2 or more characters preying on the minds of each other to create conflict
or
1 solitary character in mental conflict with their own mind
-Characters try to discover their own purpose
-Characters have a fear or fascination with death
-Narrative confusion of what is real and what is not
-Non linear edits/flashbacks/montage

The Game -
It starts of with the main character battleing with his own mind, as he is made to believe that he is psychotic and he believes he is dangerous. But we find out it has all been a trick from his brother and he has been forced to being psychotic as he believes it is real, but it is shown to all be a trick which his brother has been playing on him. Therefore it matches and shows the convention of the narrative really well as it uses both and the viewer doesn't even know what narrative it is.
It also matches the convention of him trying to discover his own purpose as he doesn't know what is real or not anymore, it is also a mystery not just for the characters but for the viewer as well. It definately starts of as a danger in the mental level but it ends with a bit of mild violence

Analyzing the film JFK

> THE CONVENTIONS OF A POLITICAL THRILLER
A political thriller is a thriller that is set against the backdrop of political power struggle. They usually involve various plots, rarely legal, designed to give political power to someone, while his opponents try to stop him from getting it. They can involve national or international political scenarios.

- Opposing characters will try and prevent the person from gaining the power.
- 2 sets of character - ranked by authority.

> THE NARRATIVE
The film JFK examines events leading up the assassination of John. F. Kennedy. and alleged subsequent cover-up, through the eyes of former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison.

> THE CHARACTERS
You have the smaller characters who give their point of view of what they saw during the assassination of JFK.
Then you have JFK who is the main character, and he's seen as the protagonist because he is a liked president because first impressions of him is that he's a family man

> EDITING AND CAMERA ANGLES.
The opening scene shows real footage of political
> THE LIGHTING
The lighting is quite contrasted from light, when the scene is cheerful, and dark when they are flashing back to whats happened in the past, which shows how Kennedy was assasinated.
> THE COSTUMES
The costumes suit the time period which is around the 1960's so they wear grey and trilby/bowler hats if they are wealthy. If they aren't wealthy people they'll probably just wear quite casual, patterned shirts.
